Okey Dokey. I'll Post.
Feb. 22nd, 2003 11:22 amI want to post an observation:
I saw a commerical for Florida Natural Orange Juice.
The premise of the commerical is that times have changed in terms of what transpires at the breakfast table in modern times as opposed to 40 years ago.
The first scene shows 50's style "refinement", the father reading his newspaper at the breakfast table, the daughter in a dress and the little son well behaved. Also, the mother has a huge breakfast prepared and is in a dress, heels and make-up.
Cut to "now" and the little son is running around like a maniac in his underwear and a cape, the daughter is running around hectic, the mom is on the phone, ready to go to work and where is the dad? Reading his paper at the breakfast table, oblivious to the chaos that is swirling about him.
I guess times really haven't changed, right kids?
The reason I have a problem with this commercial is because, like other recent ads, it shows the father is completely uninvolved and distant from is family. It is as though his only responsibility is to make money. I mean, in the commercial the wife is getting ready to go to work too, but she has to rein the kids in. The dad does nothing. I think this ad does a great disservice to men and women because it perpetuates the myth that men do not have to be involved in their family therefore, women should not expect any help with home life and also, this completely betlittles the men who DO help with home life. Just negates their existence.
What do you think?
