ok if i were a man and they instituted that i would personally organize more violence against women until it were lifted.
you would think europe had learned the "collective guilt" lesson by now.

Here's a good article about the proposed tax:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2004/10/05/wswed05.xml&sSheet=/news/2004/10/05/ixworld.html

The article explains the rational, who is doing the proposal and that it is very unlikely that the proposal will pass. That said, I think it is a good idea...but I think lots of things are good ideas.

But men are probably still the primary "breadwinners" in many Swedish families, right? Won't this extra tax have a trickle-down effect on their wives and daughters? Uh?

I'm not seeing the logic of this at the moment.

Bad idea. Maybe there should be a "have to buy them dinner tax" where women pay taxes to fund men having to pick up the check, and for discrimination at ladies' night? No, wait - that's a stupid idea too.

Inflamatory by design

There is no inherent reason that men should have a "collective financial responsibility" any more than society as a whole should have a "collective financial responsibility".

If they think that they need a redistribution of wealth due to systematic oppression of women in Sweden, then they should attempt to pass a bill for reparations. They would have to make their motives more clear. And like reparations for slavery in the US would not be paid by white people only, it would be paid by the government as a whole to people who could show damages.

If they think that the damage caused by domestic violence should be paid for by its perpetrators, then they should heavily fine perpetrators of domestic violence. After they are convicted.

People only attempt to correct misbehavior in tax law when they would like to short circuit the courts. And that's fucked up every time. No one should be denied their opportunity to defend themselves in court.
